Whilst BP officials and their Chief Executive struts about assuring the world and the US President that they will eventually clean up their sick and poisonous gigantic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico; there are countless animals, birds and fish who are being terminally contaminated and killed by this entirely corporate, profit driven disaster. The planet, animals, and, humans, are simply fodder for companies like BP, Esso, Shell, Union Carbide to simple trample over, in pursuit of their glorious multi-billion profits. The Chief Executives and their cosy colleagues, get rich and fat on these massive profits, enjoying their mega-comfortable lifestyles in the rural billionaire homes, ranches and farm-houses;, with their hunting and shooting adventures and their 4x4s. Whilst the rest of the world around them, decays, suffers, contaminates and dies becuause of their filthy, morally debased, pursuit of monetary riches.

What BP have done in the Gulf of Mexico, and have done before elsewhere and will invariably do again; is ECO-CIDE! Killing and maiming the planet, and its varied life forms. I am tempted to say that, the chief executive and senior officials of these moronic profit making gigantic machines, should be all gathered up and dumped right in the thick of this poisonous oil slick. They should be told sink or swim in the poison of your own making!

It is left to the Robin Hoods, Banda Singh Bahadurs of past and present, to fight this legalised murder of the planet and its animals. The poor, dismepowered, money-less humans who are not part of the chain of profit making, like the tens of thousands of residents of Bhopal (central India) who bore the direct brunt of the 1984 Union Carbide chemical explosion - the "worlds deadliest industrial accident"; are also treated like the abundantly defenceless, voiceless animals. Bhopals residents too, are profitless, voiceless, defenceless animals. Indeed, a good taste of what animals feel and suffer, through a human experience!

The Noble 'Servant' Of Peshawar

Khurshid Khan, an eminent 60-year-old lawyer and deputy attorney general of Pakistan, wants to "heal the wounds" of the terror-stricken minority Sikh community in that country.

So he does an extraordinary thing at a temple in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Every day when he handles his work as a legal expert, Khan visits a Sikh temple in center of the city, wraps a piece of cloth around his head to show his respect, and sits in the doorway to shine the shoes of Sikhs, whose community has come under frequent attack by Taliban militants over the last few years.

Two months back, militants in Khyber Agency abducted three Sikhs and demanded for a huge ransom for their release. Two were eventually freed, but one, Jispal Singh, was killed in brutal fashion and his corpse left on the roadside in the tribal area.

"I went to offer my condolences to the family of Jispal Singh and that was a turning point in my life," Khan tells RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal. "I realized that as a Pashtun I should work to 'heal their wounds' by becoming their sewadar (servant). I want to give them a message of love and brotherhood, and that's why every day I am here to shine their shoes."

Khan says he is himself a landlord and doesn't even shine his own shoes at his home. But his cause inspires him to sit on the ground on a daily basis and shine 70-80 pairs of shoes.

"I can see the light of love in their eyes for me and my people," he maintains.

He adds that Sikhs have lived in the area with the dominant Pashtun communities for centuries, pay taxes, and play an important role in the economic progress of the region. But still, he laments, we fail to protect their lives and properties.

They are being killed and kidnapped by the Taliban in Orakzai, Kurrum, and Khyber tribal regions, Khan says, adding that other Pakistanis must stand by them in these critical hours and give them a sense of oneness and brotherhood.

An estimated 28,000 Sikhs live in Pakistan, including about 10,000 who live in the tribal region and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of the conflict-ridden country. In May 2009, Taliban militants destroyed 11 Sikh homes in the Orakzai tribal district after accusing them of failing to pay "taxes." The ongoing conflict in the Buner and Swat districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has displaced more than 200 families.

Truly agree with that statement. This one Singh is so inspiring how many of us even bother going to peaceful protest in western world?

The flowers were raining outside the Eidgah in Bhopal. The beauty of this picture lies in the fact that Sikh boys are welcoming the Muslims coming out of Eidgah after offering the Namaz with flowers.

The Sikh community welcomes the Muslims after Namaz in Bhopal, as a goodwill gesture. For decades the office-bearers of local Sikh organisations have been greeting Muslims ‘Eid Mubarak’ in this manner.

Naturally, such a gesture overwhelms the other community. Reaching out to the other community is the need of the hour. We must celebrate the festivals of the other community and spread the message of harmony.



Such photographs are rare as people are getting narrow-minded and don’t prefer interacting with other communities and groups. Working relationships are okay but family ties are not as strong as they used to be in the past.

In this case there is no political platform but the ordinary Sikhs meeting ordinary Muslims. And this is the spirit of Hindustaniat. Kudos to the Sikh organisations who take this extra step towards reaching to the other community. This photo has a lesson for everybody among us to learn. Will we?

I was watching the news last night when I herd Anita Roddick had died. Have to say personally she was a great business women how she made Body Shop into such a recognizable brand name but yet campaigned for environment. It is true that she was quite ahead of her time encouraging use of organic ingredients and reuse of packaging. She often encouraged customers to bring in bottles for refills in exchange for money off. These environmental concepts have been core to success of Body Shop and have been well ahead of the rest off the world. I think she was was to a sense successful where Sikh have failed to promote environmental philosophy of Guroo Sahibs and Gursikhs such as Prof Puran Singh Ji.

Tributes flooded in Tuesday for Anita Roddick, the British founder of The Body Shop cosmetics chain and "capitalist with a conscience" who has died at the age of 64 after a major brain haemorrhage.

Roddick is best known as the driving force behind The Body Shop, a highly successful international chain of shops set up in 1976 which sold simple, ethical and environmentally-friendly beauty products.

The shop was also an early pioneer of recycling -- customers were encouraged to bring empty containers back to the store for refills after buying the products.

The Body Shop, which has over 2,000 stores in more than 50 countries, was bought by French cosmetics chain L'Oreal last year for 652 million pounds (957 million euros, 1.3 billion dollars).

Some campaigners were shocked by the decision to sell to a major corporation, but Roddick said she was confident she could be a "Trojan horse" by taking The Body Shop's principles to L'Oreal.

This is a message to all the Sikh Sangat that according to the Rehat Maryada only Sikh couples (male/female) can engage in the Anand Karaj Ceremony. If the couple or either one of them is not a Sikh, then they must embrace the Sikh faith. This includes that they must change their second name to Singh or Kaur in their official Document before the Marriage Ceremony (e.g. driving licence, identity card, passport).

A very washed down attempt at advising panth. A year or so ago a group of us Singhs tried to question Jathedaar Vadenti waiting for him to come of stage but his PA would not let us get close to him. Its a sad state of affair, I dont know sometimes who to blame everyones doing there own thing these days. You take amrit into Khalsa not any Jathabandi, Taksal, Samaj, or Sampartha.

They really should have take hard line and described Sikhs, so many mona will keep dhari put on dastar for wedding and hours later it will all be off for the booze up.

How can someone who has never been of a faith convert? I have been reading this story over and over on blogs and forums and I am sick to the teeth from it. The girls parents don't seem to be living a Sikh way of life or experiencing Sikhi anyway I don't see it as a great loss, its just a shame media decided to make such a big deal about it.

Miniature Guru Granth Sahib in Agra draws awe-struck believers

Agra, Sept. 4 : It is unbelievable. The holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib, is just an inch long, and this is drawing awe-struck believers to Agra's Gurdwara Maithan.

"We have Guru Granth Sahib of 1 x 1 inches long. The holy book was specially made by the British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers during World War I, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield to pray. It was manufactured in Germany," said Kashmir Singh, the head cleric of Gurudwara Maithan.

The book was handed over to the shrine by a lady in Goa some fifteen years ago.

"This Guru Granth Sahib has been here for the past 15 years. All devotees, who come here, pray to the book and take its blessing," said Daljit Singh, a devotee.

The Sikhs belief that the book contains the actual words spoken by Sikh Gurus and saints from other religions.

The Sikh religion originated with Guru Nanak (1469- 1539 AD), who was succeeded by nine other prophets, Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708 AD) being the last.

Click Mobile has closed its three retail stores as store staff were being threatened by angry customers demanding their cashback payouts.

Early this month, the retailer sent a letter to customers claiming cashback cheques 'may not be honoured'.

The retailer has been unable to pay customers hundreds of pounds worth of cashback because Barclays has frozen its account, according to Click Mobile director Saj Khan. The company claims it will seek legal action against Barclays for freezing its account and prompting the subsequent financial difficulties.

The stores in Hounslow, Ilford and Southall closed on Saturday and Khan expects them to remain shut for a further two weeks. 'That was on police advice because they have been called out to our premises a couple of times now.'

He added: 'We have had a meeting with the solicitors and lawyers and we are instigating legal proceedings against Barclays for damages that it has caused to our business.'
Barclays declined to comment.

The company made a 'conscious decision' not to take on any more new business until the cashback problems were resolved, but the stores remained open throughout August to offer a 'customer service function'. Khan said customers can contact the company via its call centre while the stores aren't operating.

Click said its plans to pay customers' cashback within four to six weeks are still on track. 'That situation is still the same; that hasn't changed.'

Walking does more than driving to cause global warming, a leading environmentalist has calculated.

Food production is now so energy-intensive that more carbon is emitted providing a person with enough calories to walk to the shops than a car would emit over the same distance. The climate could benefit if people avoided exercise, ate less and became couch potatoes. Provided, of course, they remembered to switch off the TV rather than leaving it on standby.

The health benefits of vegetarianism are being recognised by a new insurance policy.

Animal Friends Insurance is offering non-meat-eaters a discount of up to six per cent on its life insurance.

Elaine Fairfax, spokesperson for Animal Friends, said the company liked to be a "bit radical".

She said: "We're not here to preach to people about what they should eat but we just want people to know about the effects on their health of not eating meat and we think they should be rewarded just as non smokers are."

Vegetarians and vegans are 40 per cent less likely to contract serious cancer, and have a 30 per cent lower risk of developing heart disease, according to statistics from the Vegetarian Society.

The product will be available to all, but meat-eaters will not receive a discount.

Animal Friends Insurance is a not-for-profit organisation and the only UK pet insurance provider to donate 100 per cent of its net profits to animal charities worldwide.

Bees forage heavily on corn flowers to obtain pollen for the rearing of young broods, and these pollen grains also contain the Bt gene of the parent plant, because they are present in the cells from which pollen forms.

Is it not possible that while there is no lethal effect directly to the new bees, there might be some sublethal effect, such as immune suppression, acting as a slow killer?

It is great to see how the media is recognising the achivements of Sikhs from the past. The CRE is rubbish and seems to do more wrong then right maybe time for a rethink. Most of the people on these panels are out of touch with society on the whole.

You couldn’t ask for more loyal, more patriotic or more soldierly immigrants than the Sikhs. How encouraging, then, that a number of community leaders should have floated the idea of recruiting a British Sikh regiment.

Sikh cavalry units: battling bravely since the 19th century

Army chiefs, knowing their history, were thrilled. A century and a half ago, Sikhs stopped being our toughest adversaries and became our bravest sepoys. The Sikh Regiment is the most decorated in the Indian army, having fought with distinction in the two world wars and innumerable colonial campaigns.

Some of its battle honours involved almost unbelievable heroism. In 1897, at Saragarhi, 21 Sikh soldiers defended an outpost against some 10,000 insurgent tribesmen, killing thousands before they were overwhelmed. The House of Commons Rose in tribute when the news came through, and each of the 21 men was posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit.

Just the kind of spirit we need, you might think, after the debacle of our kidnapped sailors. But the Commission for Racial Equality thought otherwise and, to the dismay of both the Services and the Sikhs, decided that the initiative would contravene our race legislation.

What the devil was the CRE thinking? Everyone knows that the strength of the British Army is the esprit de corps of its regiments, most of which recruit locally among defined communities.

There was no rule that you had to be Scottish to join the Black Watch; but why else would you have wanted to? There used to be regiments that recruited specifically among, say, the Liverpool Irish or Birmingham Welsh (one such was the 2nd Battalion, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot, which won seven of the Victoria Crosses at Rorke’s Drift).

The system has worked very well for hundreds of years. So why not extend it? Why not have, say, a Hounslow Sikh Regiment, or a unit of West Yorkshire Punjabi Riflemen, or of Spitalfields Bengal Lancers? Isn’t this the ideal to which the CRE ought to be aspiring: one in which immigrants can be committed to the British state and constitution without having to abandon their ancestral identities?

Think of the splendid Indian army dress uniforms we could revive. We might even be able to wheel out the odd elephant for ceremonial parades. It would be multiculturalism at its best – different traditions loyal to one Crown – rather than the deracinated mush that passes for multiculturalism in state schools. What an opportunity we have passed up.

A number of well-known companies, including AA, Birds Eye and, recently, Alliance Boots, have recently been bought by private equity firms.

Unions have argued that private equity firms pay too little tax

Last week the head of one UK private equity group, SVG's Nick Ferguson, said the claims may have some justification, when he admitted that some of those running and investing in private equity were paying tax at a lower level than cleaners.

Labour MP George Mudie, a member of the committee, said that such an admittance meant the Chancellor was "bound to do something about it".

He claimed that individuals with "money coming out of their ears" were using the system to reduce their tax payments.

And he complained that information supplied to the committee had been "bland".

Documents submitted said that more than £80bn have been invested in about 29,500 firms since 1983.

It amazes me how over the past 10 years the Government claims that the gap between the rich and poor is decreasing yet the average family is paying more in direct and indirect taxes (e.g. VAT) then they receive in benefits and tax brakes. It’s completely ridiculous that the fat cats in the square mile get away with not paying tax yet the average family is bombarded with taxes even after they die when the Government comes along and takes 40% of an estate worth over £250,000.

Missing: Large lake in southern Chile

A lake in southern Chile has mysteriously disappeared, prompting speculation the ground has simply opened up and swallowed it whole.

The lake was situated in the Magallanes region in Patagonia and was fed by water, mostly from melting glaciers.

One theory is that the area was hit by an earth tremor that opened a crack in the ground which acted like a drain

Oldest MP dies at 82

Labour MP Piara Khabra has died at the age of 82.
The Ealing Southall MP was the oldest in the Commons. First elected in 1992, Khabra was one of a small number of black and Asian MPs.
