Last Saturday of every month is a student Keertan program at Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Park Avenue, Southall. The keertan has English Translations on projector screen and anyone can come and do keertan. Here are photos of last Sunday.

I planned to go to Panjab in the summer holidays in 2000.I wanted to keep my Kesh, so I didn't have a hair cut for a long time.Before I went on holiday I was told, 'have a hair cut, you look scruffy!'But I didn't want to, because I wanted to fulfil my dream of accepting my true identity.In Panjab I was asked:"Do you want to get a haircut from the village Barber?""No!" I replied, "Not on the land where Guru Gobind Singh Jee sacrificed his four sons, and family for us!...Not on the land where Bhai Taru Singh refused to have his hair cut and instead accepted his scalp to be scraped off!...Not on the land where Singhs and Singhnian who gave their heads but not their Sikhi!"How could I cut my hair on that ground which was stained with blood of the Gurus and Shaheeds (martyrs) who died for our Sikhi?

I thought what would my family would think of my keeping Kesh.I thought what would the relatives, who have a negative image of Singhs think of me keeping Kesh.I thought what would people at my school say or do if I kept Kesh.I decided not to cut my hair and started to tie a turban in the Christmas holidays during Year 11.

My dad told me that by becoming a Singh I would possibly face numerous problems and that am I willing and prepared to face those challenges."Singh's find it difficult to get married!""Singh's struggle to get good jobs because of racism!""In a town where there aren't any turbaned Sikh children, you will be face with racism!"I replied, "The Guru's whose path I have chosen will look after me".I would find good and beautiful wife with the Guru's grace.I would rather work in a factory and be proud son of a Father, rather than work in a high flying job but with no self-respect.I would rather people swear at me than turn my back on my Beloved Guru.

“Vaheguruu Gurmantar Hai…”

Mantar is a Sanskrit word, simply meaning "incantation". Just as the fragrance is infused in the flower, and the light of the sun is hidden in the colours, similarly, the essence of the Divine Expression resulting from Super Consciousness is summed up in the Mantar. The Akhree or the letter form of Mantar is the expression of the subtle Primal Sound, which is beyond the reach of our bodily senses and the three modes of material nature. Thus the Mantar is not an ordinary word; it's embedded with the transcendental vibratory sound that represents the Absolute Purity.

Northolt Nishkam Sevak Jatha Program

Yesterday I went to the Program at Northolt in a sports field organized by Guru Nanak Nishkam Sevak Jatha, GNNSJ. Its been done a few times and is good I just wish they attracted more non Sikhs ass they have a lot of good exhibitions and stuff which could educated the wider community especially in today with everything going on in London. Receiving Naam

I was asked about this eventually after going in circles while the person tried to avoid the question but I got it out of them eventually. There are sop many misconceptions about receiving Naam and why the Guptness people ask. People see something at a rainsbhai and think that's what receiving naam from Panj is about. I didn't know what I could and couldn't say and then by chance I came across this today......

According to Gurmat, the Naam we get from the Panj Pyare during Amrit Sanchaar is secret, and given to us upon the condition of us giving our head to Guru Ji. Eventhough Bhai Gurdas Ji states “Waheguru Gurmanter Hai, Jap Haumai Koi”, the Gurmantar is secret, and throughout Gurbani, Maharaj uses many other names of God to describe him, such Raam, Allah, and so forth. The Gurmantar is only placed inside us by the Panj Pyares, when they put Amrit in our eyes, mouth, and on to of our head, and then place their hands on our head and infuse the Naam inside us, like an electrical current all do Naam Simran abyass together. Then Naam comes into our breath system, and hopefully we strive to remember Guru Ji with every breath from then on.

Simran isnt allowed in the Gurdwara?

Simran is not a “Reet” started by Bhai Randhir Singh. This is another of them silly made up stories which Punjabis pass to the next man in the Gurdwara, without ever researching to see if it is actually true. In fact, Gursikhs who were companions of Bhai sahib state he never did simran in keertan. He only did keertan of the Gurbani Shabad. Plus he only did one shabad at a time rather than a number of shabads on a specific subject, which are common now. So when he did keertan for 48 hours at a time in Main Historical Gurdwaras, he did one shabad only, but got so deep into that one shabad than he meditated on it for 48 hours, which shows his Jeevan.

Stand alone Simran - as many now do with wajas in akhand jaaps or 1hour simran programmes is a relatively new phenomenom. In fact, I believe its real pioneer was Bhai Sahib Rama Singh. If we listen to keertan at Sri Harmandar sahib, you will never hear simran, neither are people allow to sing with the kirtanees in the jatha style. It is true that Akhand kirtani Jatha has introduced a different style of keertan to the Panth, but this was after Bhai sahib Randhir Singh. Whether it is new, or something re-introduced, which was lost over time, is open to debate? This style of keertan is called “Sangatee keertan”, in which the whole sangat sings along aswell. Is this wrong? I do not see why? Surely the essence of keertan is that everyone sings and meditates, rather than sitting silently which only makes the mind wonder or makes one fall asleep. Go to any rainsbhai and you will see plenty of sangat compared any raagi darbaar that happens every week at the Gurdwara. People travel all over the country because they get Gurbani Rass from “Sangaatee keertan”. Many Gursikhs state that meditating on Naam by oneself, has certain Rass, but in sangat you benefit from everyone, so it is like a tidal wave of Rass.

Is doing Simran wrong in Sangat? Firstly is doing Simran wrong? No, it is essential part of sikhi. All Gurbani leads us to the direction of Naam Simran. If you were to do a search of Gurbani for references to Naam, you will get the whole Sahib Siri Guru Granth Sahib. Naam is Sikhi. “Raam Naam Sabh Hai Raam Nama” is Guru ji saying everything is Naam, so how can it be avoided or wrong?
